يتناول البحث مبدأ الانسجام الأخلاقي عند الفيلسوف الأمريكي " فريد فيلدمان" وارتباطه بمفهوم الصحراء في فلسفة الأخلاق، حيث أن الهدف منه هو الوصول إلى الحياة السعيدة، وتناول البحث تقييم لما قدمه "فيلدمان" في مجال فلسفة الأخلاق وبالتحديد محاولة هذا الفيلسوف تقديم شكل جديد من مذهب اللذة الأخلاقي. مع توضيح تأكيد "فيلدمان" على أن فكرة اللذة ليست فكرة شريرة بل هي فكرة إيجابية وأن الألم في حد ذاته لا يجعل الحياة الإنسانية أفضل. وأن دفاع "فيلدمان" عن مذهب اللذة لا يعد نصرا ً مميزاً ولكنه بلا شك انجاز مهم أسفر ما يمكن أن نطلق عليه شكل جديد من مذهب اللذة، وهو مذهب اللذة الذي يقوم على النتائج، ويعد أيضاً نتاج محاولة "فيلدمان" التوفيق بين مذهب اللذة ومذهب المنفعة.
