The Effectiveness of A Proposed Training Program to Develop the Attitudes of Female Students of the Faculty of Education at Qatar University Towards the Use of Augmented Reality Technology in the Teaching of Social Studies at the Primary Level

Abstract

This study aimed to identify the effectiveness of a proposed training program to develop the attitudes of pre-service teachers towards the use of augmented reality technology (AR) in the teaching of social studies in the primary stage. The training program was designed with six training workshops. The AR applications included the popular HP REVEAL application and the 4D+ applications.
The researchers designed a questionnaire for this study to determine the attitudes of female students towards the use of AR in teaching social studies. The questionnaire focused on four main areas. The study adopted a semi-experimental approach.
The sample for the study consisted of 22 female students in the primary education program in the Faculty of Education, Qatar University, who were studying the teaching of social studies during the spring of 2016; they had applied for the training program during the course study and responded to the questionnaire before and after the experiment.
The results of the study revealed that there were statistically significant differences at the level of 0.01 among the average female students in their attitudes towards using AR technology in teaching social studies in general and in each of the four areas of the questionnaire.
The study recommended expanding the teaching of technical applications (AR) for students in the Faculty of Education in all disciplines, and especially in social studies. Also, the study recommended paying attention to the design of the curricula of all courses around the possibilities of this technology, as well as to training teachers in service on the skills of using this technology and instilling positive attitudes towards it.
