This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of phonics method and compare it with the traditional way in teaching reading skills to fourth grade students with academic learning disabilities. The study sample were (45) students from the fourth grade students who have learning disabilities. The sample divided into two groups, a control and experimental. A phonic remedial program was developed and consisted of five units, starting with teaching the voice of the characters and ending with reading the paragraph and identified behavioral objectives and procedures and the role of both the student and the teacher within each unit of the program. It has been using covariance analysis (ANCOVA) to examine if there is a statistically significant due to the differences in teaching method (phonic, traditional) in the academic achievement. The results indicated the effectiveness of teaching using phonics and on different levels: paragraphs, sentences, words, syllables and letters. The study recommended using this method in teaching students with learning disabilities as an effective method in improving abstract reading ability.
