Abstract

This study aimed at identifying the availability of the NCATE standards for both institution and program accreditation in the College of Basic Education, Kuwait.  It also identified the strengths and deficiencies in these two dimensions.  It attempted to elicit results with statistically significant differences between the means of the sample of the study and its variables (gender, major, years of experience and academic rank) with regard to the availability of these standards.  The study is based on a questionnaire consisting of nine items addressing the institution accreditation and seven items addressing the program accreditation.  The sample of the study consisted of 152 faculty members representing all the academic departments housed by the College of Basic Education.  The data was analyzed using One-Way ANOVA test and T-test.  Results of the study showed that in terms of institution accreditation the following standards were available: administrative organization, students and institutional structure.  However, the following standards were not available: academic organization, the faculty-student ratio, the infrastructure, technical support services, financial services and research. As for the program accreditation, the standards available were: the general objectives and competencies and major sheets, while the standards unavailable were: teaching methods, textbooks and references, equipment, teaching aids, student evaluation and educational outputs.  Results also showed that there are statistically significant differences in favor of male students, while the other variables (major, years of experience and academic rank) were independent of the results of the study.  In light of these results, the researcher came up with recommendations and a strategic framework in order to apply the NCATE standards for institution and program accreditation in the College of Basic Education.
