The Effectiveness of A proposed Program Based on Active Learning in Developing Creativity Thinking Skills in Science Among Basic Education Students in The Sultanate of Oman

Abstract

The current study aimed to explore the effectiveness of a proposed program based on active learning in developing creative thinking skills in science among basic education students in the Sultanate of Oman. The current study used the experimental approach with a quasi-experimental design of several experimental and control groups (pre-post test). The study population consisted of all eighth-grade students of basic education in Dhofar Governorate. The study sample consisted of (7) schools and (598) students. The students were randomly distributed into control groups of (297) male and female students and experimental groups of (301) male and female students. To achieve the aim of the study, a program based on active learning in the units of (reproduction and development) and (magnetism and electricity), and the Creative Thinking Test (CTT) were developed. The validity and reliability of the tools were verified. The proposed program was applied to the experimental groups, while control groups were taught as traditionally. The Creative Thinking Test in science was applied, before and after, to all groups. The results of the study showed that there were statistically significant differences at (α = 0.05) between the students’ mean scores of the control groups and the experimental groups on the creative thinking test as a whole and its skills (originality, fluency, flexibility, generosity, and sensitivity to problems) in favour of the experimental groups. The effect size was big which indicates the effectiveness of the proposed program based on active learning in developing creative thinking skills in science among the study sample. The study recommended several points, including generalizing the proposed program to eighth-grade students in the rest of the Sultanate of Oman's schools and training in-service teachers to employ many approaches and teaching strategies based on the philosophy of active learning.
