The role of social media in promoting citizenship values among Kuwait University students - College of Education as a model

Abstract

This research aims to identify the role of electronic communication media in promoting citizenship values among university youth from the point of view of the students of the College of Education at Kuwait University , and to search for the extent of statistically significant differences in the answers of the research sample members according to the variables of male and female gender, academic year, number of hours spent by the student on electronic communication media,. As for the research sample, it amounted to (836) male and female students, or (9.21%), and they were drawn using a simple random sample method. The research tool, represented by a questionnaire consisting of (29) items, was applied after verifying its validity and reliability on the target sample. The research results showed that the opinions of the College of Education students about the role of social media in promoting citizenship values among Kuwait University students were at the average level while there were statistically significant differences in favor of females in their degree of appreciation for the role of social media in promoting citizenship values, as well as a positive correlation between the number of hours  and the degree of their appreciation for its role in promoting citizenship values. The results did not show statistically significant differences in the responses of sample members according to the academic year.  Recommendations included creating targeted awareness-raising e-learning content that promotes citizenship values and holding workshops for students on how to use social media to promote citizenship values.
