Abstract

The research aims to explore the spatial connotations in the plays of Maurice Maiterlane, one of the most prominent pioneers of symbolic theater, and how they refer to the philosophical, social and political visions of the writer, and contribute to building the ambiguous and symbolic atmosphere that characterizes the theater of "Maiterlane", by applying the principles of semiotics to selected models of his texts. The research is divided into two main sections: The first section: entitled "Place in Symbolic Theater" and deals with the concept of symbolic theater and the image of the place and its types in the theatrical text. The second section: entitled "A semiotic reading of the place in the texts of Metrolink". It deals with a semiotic analysis of spatial structure in Maurice Maiterlane's symbolic texts (research sample), as a system of linguistic signs that carry multiple connotations. The research has proven the role of the symbol in opening new horizons for the interpretation of texts compatible with the historical context and the intellectual and philosophical vision of the writer, through the movement of the deep structure of the place in the opposite direction to the apparent structure, and the contribution of polarity and opposing dualities effectively in enriching the semantic fabric of the spatial structure, and the role of colors as an essential element in the construction of the semantics of place, the writer used them brilliantly to create psychological depth and complex effects, adding a new dimension to the process of interpretation in the three texts.
