The Effect of Using the Reciprocal Teaching Strategy on Developing English Language Listening Comprehension Skills and Motivation towards Practising the Teaching Profession among Student-Teachers

Abstract

The current study aimed at investigating the effect of using the Reciprocal Teaching Strategy on developing English language listening comprehension skills and increasing motivation towards practising teaching profession among English language student-teachers enrolled in the online General Diploma in education, at the Faculty of Graduate Studies for Education, Cairo University, during the second semester of the academic year 2024/2025. The participants were one experimental group of forty-three students. Three main instruments were used for data collection: listening comprehension skills checklist, English language listening comprehension test and motivation scale towards practising teaching profession. The researcher taught the study group English Language Teaching Strategies Course (2) using the Reciprocal Teaching Strategy for three months, three hours per week. The pre-post administrations of the instruments were treated using t-test. The results reflected that the post-performance of the study group obviously exceeded its pre-performance. Thus, the results confirmed the study hypotheses. They proved the positive effect of using the Reciprocal Teaching Strategy on developing the overall English language listening skill, each assigned listening comprehension sub-skill and motivation towards practising the teaching profession among prospective English language teachers.
