The Factors Causing Academic Failure among Basic Education College Students as Perceived by them

Abstract

The purpose of the study is to investigate the factors causing academic failure among basic education college students as perceived by them. The study adopted the descriptive approach through a simple random sample consisted of (207) male and female students (54 males, 153 females). To achieve the aim of the study the researcher administrated a questionnaire consisted of (28) items distributed into the following domains: courses and exams, academic counseling, university environment and personal factors. The findings of the study showed that the means of  the factors causing academic failure among basic education college students ranged between (2.86- 2.64) in an average level as the academic counseling domain came first, while, the personal factors came in the last rank. Further, there were significant statistical differences at the level of (α =0.05) attributed to gender effect in favor of females. There were significant statistical differences at the level of (α =0.05) attributed to credit hours in favor of 61-90 credits. The researcher recommended the need to take care of academic counseling by the basic education college thorough a comprehensive plan to guide and help students though their study phases.
